'Son Heung-min 2x' Tottenham club record, shabby goodbye
Tottenham Hotspur are set to release Tanguy Ndombele on a free transfer.
The UK's Evening Standard reported on Monday (June 9) that “Tottenham will let club record signing Ndombele go on a free. Ndombele, who has not played for Spurs for more than two years since January 2022, has spent time on loan at Napoli and Galatasaray. Ndombele, who has made 91 appearances for Spurs, will leave as a free agent with one year remaining on his contract."
Ndombele remains the worst signing in Tottenham's history. Ndombele joined Tottenham from Lyon for €62 million, and five years later, it's still the club's most expensive transfer. There have been other big names in the game, such as Alexandre Lacazette (€58 million), Brennan Johnson (€55 million), Cristian Romero (€52 million), and James Maddison (€46.3 million), but none of them have been able to surpass Ndombele. Son Heung-min is 16th on the list with €30 million.
Ndombele came in with huge expectations and lost the trust of the fans with his inconsistency. After the arrival of Antonio Conte, there were rumors of a falling out, and he was sent out on loan to Lyon for the second half of the 2021-22 season before returning to Napoli in 2022-23. He was a bench player for Napoli. He would come on when one of Andre-Franck Zambo Anguissa, Piotr Zielinski, or Stanislaw Lobotka was out. He played 30 Serie A games for the club, logging 792 minutes.
He won the Serie A title with Kim Min-jae. Upon his return to Tottenham, there was no place for him. In his absence, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp and Yves Bissouma have been brought in, along with Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Ndombele is effectively out of the picture.
On loan to Galatasaray, Ndombele tasted success in the Turkkiye Super Lig, but underperformed. His shortcomings were exposed and he failed to make a 안전놀이터 difference. After Napoli and Galatasaray failed to buy him outright, Ndombele returned to Tottenham but is not in manager Enze Postecoglou's plans. The existing midfield is intact, Pape Mattharsar has improved and James Maddison has arrived.
Despite still having one year left on his contract, Tottenham will let Ndombele go for free rather than try to sell him. In effect, it's a waiver and a dishonorable discharge. France's Foot Mercato was the first to speak. "Ndombele is about to become a free agent and has ended his loan at Galatasaray and returned to Tottenham to sort out his situation. Spurs have decided to part ways with Ndombele and both parties have agreed to terminate the contract. An announcement will be made soon."
“Ndombele has been the subject of interest from several clubs,” said France's GetfootballNewsFrance. He will be looking for a move after a disappointing campaign in the Premier League. It remains to be seen where his next team will be,” said a source close to the situation.
Following Ndombele, Tottenham have already parted ways with four players - Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Japhet Tanganga, and Ryan Sessegnon - in a squad overhaul. No signings have been announced yet. Along with the new signings, Tottenham fans are also hoping for the re-signing of key players, including the re-signing of Son Heung-min.
