'Good news for Man Utd': Benfica to sell 'next Bruno Fernandes'

 


Good news for Manchester United. SL Benfica are expected to reduce the transfer fee for the 'next Bruno Fernandez' Joao Neves.

“Contrary to other reports that Benfica will stick to Neves' release clause, the club will consider selling him if it receives an offer of at least £86 million ($151 million),” said Duncan Castle, a reporter for The Times.

This season, United have had a successful campaign in their own right. They finished eighth in the English Premier League (EPL), won the FA Cup, and qualified for next season's UEFA Europa League (UEL).

However, if there is a problem, it's in the midfield. United have had major problems in the back three this season. Casemiro, who joined from Real Madrid last season, hasn't been at his best due to an aging curve, while Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, and Sofiane Amrabat have been limited by injuries and poor form.

Therefore, United are looking to sign a midfielder. Their target is Neves. Neves is a defensive midfielder who has been given the opportunity to play as a central midfielder. He can also play in a central midfield or attacking role. His passing ability is good enough to get involved in the buildup at the back.

Neves is a former member of the youth team of Portuguese club Benfica. He joined Benfica in 2016 and is a franchise star who has only played for one club since. After playing for Benfica's B team in 2022, Neves was called up to the first team last season and made his first-team debut.

After his first-team call-up, Neves showed his potential last season, scoring one goal in 17 league games. This season, he has made the transition to the first team seamlessly. Benfica finished second in the league with 25 wins, five draws, four losses, and 80 points, led by Neves' performance. His performances this season have prompted several clubs to join the race for his signature, with United being the most active, but United's rivals have also joined the fray. Chelsea and Liverpool have also been in the running for Neves.

However, United made the first move. “Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Bayern Munich are interested in João Neves,” Portuguese media outlet Hecord reported on April 4. United preemptively made a €60 million ($897 million) offer to SL Benfica."

United's first offer was rejected, but then came the good news. Benfica would consider selling Neves for just €151 million, with no buyout clause. The news must have reached other clubs. United now have a reason to move faster.
