Pochettino claps and fists 'self-congratulatory' Why?
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has given himself a pat on the back for his side's second-half comeback.
According to European soccer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Pochettino smiled and clapped during his pre-match press conference against Brighton on Thursday (ET) when a reporter said, “Since Dec. 26, only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool have more points than Chelsea,” and Pochettino smiled and clapped. He then pumped his fists and pointed his index fingers to the sky in self-congratulation.
Pochettino arrived at Chelsea ahead of this season. After a disastrous 12th-place finish in the league last season under Graham Potter and Frank Lampard, the Blues were looking to rebound by bringing in Pochettino, who had previously achieved considerable success in the Premier League with Tottenham.
They also spent a lot of money in the transfer market. They brought in Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Enzo Fernandez from Benfica. Both players also broke the Premier League transfer record at the time.
But the results didn't follow. They won just three games (D3, D4) in their opening 10 matches. A 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the 11th round seemed to turn things around, but four more defeats followed through December, and at one point they were outside the top 10 in the league. Pochettino was also under fire within a season.
With two games to go until the end of the season, Chelsea currently sit in seventh place. With only six points separating them from fifth-place Tottenham, they can mathematically finish as high as fifth, which means their second-half performance has been very good.
In fact, as of after Boxing Day, Chelsea's league position is fourth. Manchester City and Arsenal are currently in contention for the title, while Liverpool have clinched third place. Chelsea is right behind those three teams. It's a great second-half 바카라사이트 turnaround. Naturally, the Pochettino sacking rumors have also entered the picture.
The Telegraph recently wrote: “Looking at the 2024 rankings alone, Chelsea are fourth. Pochettino should lead Chelsea next season,” the Telegraph recently wrote, highlighting the Blues' remarkable turnaround.
Chelsea legend Joe Cole also said, “The Chelsea manager is the most difficult job in football. Pochettino needs to be given more time,” said Chelsea legend Joe Cole, who also believes Pochettino should be given the job.
Chelsea owner Todd Boleyn is also pleased with the recent performances. “We've played beautifully against Aston Villa, Tottenham and West Ham United,” he said, according to the Tribune, “I've never seen a team change so quickly.”
Pochettino attended the pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's game against Brighton and clapped his hands when the subject of recent results came up.
“Football speaks in results, and sometimes bad results happen because of inexplicable things. We need to finish this season well to have a chance of qualifying for the European Club Championships,” he said, adding that the next two games are crucial to start the next season on a positive note.
“The fans have seen what we've done. We did a fantastic job, and even when things got bad, we kept our composure and kept pushing on. I'm very excited about the future at Chelsea,” he added, expressing his desire to continue as Chelsea manager.
