First QS of the season, Oh Won-seok pleased with his pitching

SSG Landers left-hander Oh Won-seok lived up to his manager's expectations with his best pitch of the season.

On Thursday, he started the fourth game of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League against the Samsung Lions at SSG Landers Field in Incheon, South Korea, and pitched six innings of two-hit ball with two walks and seven strikeouts to earn his third win of the season in the team's 9-2 victory. It was the first time in his professional career that Oh picked up a win against Samsung. It had been 214 days since he had a quality start (six innings or more and three earned runs or less) since Oct. 13 last year against the Literature Kiwoom Heroes.

He threw 88 pitches, with the fewest in the second and third innings (eight or more). By pitch type, fastballs (62) were the most common, followed by curves (20), sliders (5), and forkballs (1). The fastball topped out at 146 km/h.

Won-seok Oh suffered his second loss of the season in his previous outing on Aug. 8 against the LG Twins in Jamsil, giving up six runs on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts in five innings. Looking back on Oh's performance on the 8th, SSG manager Lee Sung-yong said, “I don't think he can get over the hump, and neither can LG. I want to see him on the mound to get out of a jam and get angry with himself if he can't, but I saw that in that game after giving up all the runs.”

“When you're in the starting rotation for three years, you have to get over the hump. If you've been given that opportunity, you have to change. If you can't upgrade, it's hard to get a chance in the pros, so I want you to be tough.”

Oh Won-seok cruised from the start of the match. After striking out Ryu Ji-hyuk, Gu Jauk, and David McKinnon in the top of the first, he retired Kim Young-woong, Jae-hyun Lee, and Jae-il Oh on eight pitches in the bottom of the second. Center fielder Choi Ji-hoon helped Oh Won-seok by making a jumping catch on a long hit by Lee Jae-hyun.

After shutting down the Samsung bats with three straight strikeouts to start the third inning, Oh Won-seok ended his 11-batter hitting streak in the top of the fourth inning with a double off McKinnon. He gave up a walk to Kim Young-woong to 토토 put runners in scoring position, but induced a grounder to Lee Jae-hyun at shortstop to end the inning.

Oh Won-seok looked shaky in the top of the fifth as Kang Min-ho and Kim Sung-yoon singled to lead off the inning, but Ryu Ji-hyuk grounded out to first base to end the threat. First baseman Ko Myung-joon made a nimble diving catch and stole first base himself.

Won-seok Oh took the mound in the top of the sixth inning. He struck out the leadoff batter, Koo Ja-rook, and McKinnon's grounder quickly loaded the bases. He struck out the next batter, Kim Young-woong, to complete the quality start and handed the mound over to Choi Min-joon to start the top of the seventh.

After the game, Lee said, “(Oh) Won-seok pitched his best game of the season. His pitches were a little shaky in the fourth inning, but he pitched six shutout innings. I hope he can continue to show better performance from this opportunity.” Lee praised Won-seok Oh.

“Won-seok Oh had a good lead with (Kim) Min-sik. Min-sik also showed good form at the plate. There was good communication between the batteries,” he said, encouraging his catcher, Kim Min-sik.

“We had two home runs and five RBIs from our three, four, and five center fielders, and I feel like we're stronger with (Han) Yoo-seom back,” Lee said, adding, “(Ha) Jae-hoon and (Oh) Taegon have been doing well on offense since the last game. In defense, (Choi) Ji-hoon and (Go) Myung-joon's hitting ratio was also impressive.”

Meanwhile, SSG will try to make it three in a row with left-handed ace Kim Kwang-hyun starting the second game of a three-game midweek series against Samsung on Friday. Samsung's starting pitcher is left-hander Lee Seung-hyun.
