Won Tae-in to start against Taiwan 'on the cusp of finals'

Samsung Lions homegrown ace Won Tae-in, 23, will start against Chinese Taipei in the final game of the Asian Professional Baseball Championship (APBC) 2023.

Won Tae-in will start the final qualifying game against Chinese Taipei at 7 p.m. on April 18 at Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan.

After falling to Japan (2-1) in the second round of qualifying on Sunday, South Korea (1-1) must beat Chinese Taipei (1-1) to finish second in qualifying and advance to the final.

Won, a fifth-year pro, has started 26 games this season, going 7-7 with a 3.24 ERA. In his career, Won has a 41-40 record with a 3.92 ERA in 132 games.

Won has the most international experience of any pitcher on the APBC roster.

After struggling at his first international tournament, the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, with five earned runs in four games and 5⅓ innings, Won was disappointing at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in March this year with three earned runs in three games and 4⅓ innings.

But at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, where he signaled a generational shift with a gold medal, he pitched well against Hong Kong and China, going 10 innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

"The players wanted to meet Japan again in the final and get revenge," Won told me after the game, "and I think I'll have to pitch hard to make that happen."

"I feel a lot of responsibility because I'm not the youngest in this team (comprised of players aged 24 or younger or in their third 카지노 year of professional play)," he said, "so I'll do my best and throw hard to make sure we make it to the final."

Taiwan's starting pitcher against Wen will be left-hander Wang Yen-chung (22-Rakuten Golden Eagles), who plays in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) second division.

Wang went 3-1 with a 3.70 ERA in 11 games in the NPB's second division in the 2023 season.
