WBC nightmare erased, Lee "enjoyed" throwing 6 innings of 2-run relief in APBC Korea-Japan game

Lee Yi-ri (21-KIA Tigers), who had one of the worst pitches of the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC) on March 10 against Korea, made a strong impression eight months later when he pitched again against Japan. Manager Ryu Joong-il praised him, and Lee was pleased with his performance.

Ryu's Korean baseball team lost 1-2 to Japan in the second game of the APBC Qualifier at the Tokyo Dome on Sunday.

South Korea got one run back in the top of the ninth on a solo shot by pinch-hitter Kim Hwijip. Lee received no support from the offense while on the mound and was charged with the loss.

Lee showed signs of anxiety in the top of the first inning, giving up three hits and a walk, but showed great command to minimize the damage.

After getting out of the first inning unscathed, he gave up his first run in the bottom of the third when Maki Shugo hit a grounder to 토토사이트 shortstop with the bases loaded, but he was able to get out of the jam. A solo shot to leadoff hitter Jusei Mannami in the fourth inning was the only blemish on his day.

Irie's line on the day was six hits (one home run), three walks, three strikeouts and two runs in six innings. It was a steady performance, unlike his shaky outing against Japan in the WBC, where he struck out three and walked one in ⅓ innings.

After the game, Ryu was full of praise for Lee, saying, "He overcame his early struggles and pitched well overall."

"I had a good time pitching," Lee said, adding, "Even though (Japan's lineup) is different from the WBC, the opposing hitters were able to create a good strike zone and hit my pitches well. Still, I handled myself well in crunch time and avoided giving up a lot of runs."

"I was nervous at first, but I got better as I threw the ball. Pitching coach Choi Il-un emphasized pitching balance, so I focused on that and was able to overcome it well."

"I'm most satisfied that I threw the ball with a good balance," Lee said, "I want to grow bigger and continue to participate in international competitions."
