'Financial rules breach' Everton confirm 10-point deduction

Everton have been severely punished with a 10-point deduction for breaking the rules.

"Everton have been docked 10 points for breaching the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules," the Premier League (PL) secretariat reported on Sunday.

Everton has been in the red for the past five years. The club lost £44.7 million in 2022, £102.3 million in 2021, £195 million in 2020, £139.9 million in 2019, and £118.8 million in 2018.

These are amounts that exceed regulations. The PL stipulates that each club can spend no more than £150 million to prevent overspending losses. Everton's financial losses amounted to £340 million over three years. In response, the PL filed a lawsuit against Everton in March 2022 for breaching the profit and sustainability rules.

It gets worse for Everton. The points deduction will drop Everton to 19th in the league. The Toffees, who are currently 14th in the league with four wins, two draws, and six losses, will have 10 points cut to four. They are on the same number of points as last-place Burnley, but have a goal difference advantage.

Everton will appeal. "We are both shocked and disappointed by the ruling of the Premier League (PL) Committee," Everton said in a 토토 statement on the club's official website on Sunday. The club believes that the committee has imposed a wholly disproportionate and unjustified sporting sanction," the official statement read.

"The Club has already communicated its intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League. The appeal process will now commence and the club's case will be heard by an appeal committee appointed in accordance with PL rules in due course."

"Everton cited the cost of the stadium, the impact of the war in Ukraine, which affected its sponsorship deal with USM, and the loss of value of players due to the COVID-19 pandemic," the UK's Telegraph reported. It argued that a decision to mitigate these losses would be acceptable."
