Hwang's 'resurgence' ahead of Asian Cup as Klinsmann reaps rewards against Tunisia
Hwang Ui-jo's resurgence is good news for Klinsmann.
Jürgen Klinsmann's South Korea national soccer team (ranked 26th in the FIFA rankings) defeated Tunisia (ranked 29th in the FIFA rankings) 4-0 in the first round of the October A match at the Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. on Oct. 13, extending the team's winning streak from September against Saudi Arabia.
Lee Kang-in was the star of the show against Tunisia, leading the attack in the absence of 'captain' Son Heung-min. Despite heavy pressure from the Tunisian defense, he kept possession of the ball and created chances with quality passes. He even had a hand in the team's third goal. Lee scored a fantastic free kick in the 10th minute of the second half, followed by a shot from inside the penalty box in the 12th minute of the second half, and finally, in the 22nd minute, a sharp corner kick was met by a header from Kim Min-jae that beat a defender and led to an own goal.
While the spotlight was on Lee Kang-in, there was another player to watch. Hwang Ui-jo's comeback. Hwang, who came on for Cho Kyu-sung in stoppage time, quickly rushed forward to collect the ball when Park Yong-woo's header from the midfield found its way in front of him, then calmly slotted it between his legs when he was one-on-one with the keeper. Hwang's concentration and determination were on full display.
Hwang initially expressed his joy after scoring, but then he stood and looked deep in thought. He squatted down and stared at the ground. The emotion was palpable. "Personally, I wanted to score a lot more goals, and I think it was a good feeling because it was a goal I had been waiting for a long time," he explained in the post-match mixer.
Hwang's role as a scorer during his time with Ventojo saw him pushed out of the starting lineup at the last minute last year. He moved to Nottingham Forest ahead of the 2022-23 season and then went on loan to Olympiakos, where his form suffered 토토 due to limited playing time. The effects carried over to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he was a substitute for all but the first game against Uruguay. The same can be said for Klinsmann. He came off the bench in all but one friendly against Uruguay. For now, Cho Kyu-sung seems to be the first option.
Hwang has been scoring in limited opportunities. He found the back of the net for the first time in a year against El Salvador in June, and then reopened his scoring account for the first time in four months against Tunisia.
With the Asian Cup coming up next January, Hwang's goals are definitely a positive. If you compare the goals scored by frontline forwards Hwang Eui-jo, Cho Kyu-sung, and Oh Hyun-gyu this year, Hwang has the most with two. He also scored in a limited amount of time, which is significant. It could also be a good thing for the team to go into the Asian Cup with some pressure off.
