Injuries to soccer's faithful are frightening.


Argentina defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the third South American Zone qualifier for the FIFA Confederations Cup North and Central America 2026 at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at 8:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday. With the victory, Argentina has now won all three South American qualifiers.


The hosts started Lautaro Martinez, Alvarez, Gonzalez, De Paul, Enzo Fernandez, McAllister, Taliafico, Otamendi, Romero, and Molina, with Emiliano Martinez in goal.


Argentina took an early lead. In the third minute of the first half, De Paul took a long corner and Otamendi rattled the net with a volley. After taking the lead, Argentina took it easy and didn't capitalize on several chances to extend their lead.


At the start of the second half, Paraguay made a substitution. Robert Rojas came on for Ramirez. Argentina also took Alvarez off in the eighth minute of the second half and brought on Messi. Despite the changes, the momentum was in Argentina's favor. In the 12th minute of the second half, McAllister's roving pass was met by De Paul, who shot straight at the keeper.


Argentina continued to dominate the attack. In the 38th minute, Lautaro faked out a defense near the arc and fired a shot that went over the bar. In the 42nd minute, Gonzalez's left-footed shot was deflected and off target. The game ended in a 1-0 victory for Argentina.


Despite playing 40 minutes and failing to score an offensive point, Messi still showed class and contributed to the win. She was pleased with her comeback from injury, even if she wasn't at 100% yet.


After the match, Messi said: "I was scared because I wasn't fully fit. Luckily, I've been training consistently, so I didn't feel too bad. I've been out for a while, but I'm going to keep training so I can play like I did today."


Messi will travel to Peru on April 18 for the fourth South American qualifier.
