Tottenham legends applaud 'NEW captain' Son Heung-min

A team legend has applauded Son Heung-min, 31, as the new captain of Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League (EPL).

"Robbie Keane congratulated Son Heung-min on his appointment as Tottenham captain on social media," British media outlet The Boot Room reported on Wednesday (June 13).

"Son Heung-min has been named club captain, taking over the armband from Hugo Lloris," Tottenham announced on its official website. Son, who is entering his ninth season with Tottenham, is the club's first captain. He is only the second South Korean to captain an EPL team in 11 years, with Park Ji-Sung, 42, captaining Queens Park Rangers in 2012.

Upon being named captain, Son Heung-min said on social media, "This is a very special moment for me and my family. To be named captain of Tottenham is an honor of a lifetime. I will do my best to make everyone proud," he said. "The start of the season is now upon us. We have great players and leaders at Tottenham and let's make it a memorable one."

Keane congratulated him by posting a clapping emoji here. The Irish soccer legend played for Tottenham from 2002 to 2008, scoring 122 goals and providing 32 assists in 306 appearances. He was named Tottenham's Player of the Year on three occasions. He's also known to fans in Korea, having played alongside Lee Young-pyo in the past.

As the club legend admits, Son Heung-min has a lot to live up to this year. Tottenham lost last year's vice-captain Harry Kane, 30, to Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga. The franchise star, who scored 280 goals in 435 games for Tottenham, switched clubs overnight. "There is a 'winning mentality' in Munich. It feels great to be here," he said after the move.

Add to that the fact that Yi, who has been Tottenham's captain since 2015, is expected to part ways with the club this year. "Joris has received a big offer from a club in Saudi Arabia and is considering his options," The Athletic reported. He is weighing up his options," The Athletic reported. The Saudi club is reportedly offering £300,000 a week, which is more than three times his current wages (£100,000).

That left the captaincy vacant, with Son Heung-min, now in his ninth season with Tottenham, taking over the armband. He is joined in the vice-captaincy by Christian Romero (25-Argentina) and James Maddison (27-England), who joined Tottenham from Leicester City ahead of the season.

Son has established himself as Tottenham's ace in the hole now that Kane is gone. He scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 league appearances in 2022-23 despite injuries and poor form. In the process, he reached double-digit 사설토토 goals in the EPL for the seventh consecutive season. In 2021-22, he scored 23 goals to tie Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) for the league lead. It was a first for Asia.

He's already been touted as the next captain in England. Last month, the UK's Spurs Web, which focuses on Tottenham news, listed five potential candidates to wear the captain's armband should Joris and Kane leave the club at the same time, and Son's name was the first to be mentioned. "Son is the captain of his country, South Korea, and his leadership on the international stage could serve him well at Tottenham," the publication said.

Son Heung-min has been the captain of the South Korean national team since 2018, according to the media. He has worn the captain's armband at two World Cups (Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022), leading the team to the round of 16 in Qatar.

Meanwhile, Son has been named in the starting lineup for the 2023-2024 English Premier League opening round match against Brentford at the Community Stadium in Brentford, England at 10 p.m. on Sept. 13.
